Raipur: The country’s first Bilaspur Central Jail in Chhattisgarh is being made eco-friendly (green jail). On the instructions of the jail headquarters, the local jail administration is engaged in this exercise.
For this, work has been started in a phased manner by setting goals to be run for short, medium and long term. Under this, in the first phase, work has been started on water conservation, water enrichment, energy conservation, plastic and polythene free and recycling. For this, training has been given to jail personnel as well as prisoners and detainees. To make the jails plastic free, it has been asked not to use it and to use it minimally only when necessary.
At the same time, to save water, rain water harvesting has been installed for the prisoners to use it as per need and to collect rain water. Let us tell you that a system of waste management has been made in Central Jail Bilaspur. To improve this, a new system has been created for collection, separation and disposal of wet and dry waste.
- Bricks are being made from plastic in the jail. It is also being used as per the need. For this, a machine has been installed inside the jail. It is being recycled through this. After the capacity of its bulk production is reached, it will be made available to the general public. At the same time, energy audit has been done to prevent misuse of electricity. Along with training the jail personnel, preparations are underway to use solar energy in Bilaspur as well as Central Jail, Raipur for cooking food for the prisoners.
- A survey of flora and fauna available in the jail premises is being done through NGOs. On the basis of this, a road map for the conservation and promotion of flora and fauna will be made and implemented. Its main objective is that the jail premises should act as an “oxygen generator” for Bilaspur city in the coming years.
With the aim of providing clean air and environment, Central Jail, Bilaspur is being made an “eco-friendly green jail”. Work has been started for this. This is a positive gift to the prisoners as well as to the society. -Himanshu Gupta, DG, Jail
